About Student Loans
Who writes this site, what it is for, and the rules it holds itself to about figures, sources and the limits of an estimate.
Who writes it
Paulo Araujo. Paulo builds and maintains this site. The work focuses on transparent arithmetic, figures tied to the authority that published them, and making the limits of an estimate visible rather than presenting it as certainty.
Corrections are welcome and get acted on. If a figure here disagrees with the authority it cites, that is a defect: write to pharaujo@gmail.com and it will be fixed.
What it is for
Student debt is a large financial decision, usually made young, usually under time pressure, and usually with worse information than any other decision of that size. The rules are also unusually unstable: most of the American ones on this site changed on 1 July 2026, and some of those changes have already been struck down in court.
So the aim is narrow. Show what the published rules actually say, do the arithmetic transparently, and be clear about what is not known.
What it will not do
It will not tell you that you qualify for anything, that you are approved, or that you can afford something. This site does not lend, does not underwrite, and has no standing to make those judgements. Where it uses its own judgement, as with the borrowing bands, it says so and explains where the judgement came from.
It will not invent a figure. If a number is not in a source, it does not appear, and the gap is named on the page rather than quietly filled.
It will not publish a page that exists only to carry an advertisement.
